Southlake is an upscale northern suburb of the Dallas Forth Worth Metroplex. In 2000, the population was at 21, 500, but the city has continued to grow a lot since then. D Magazine named Southlake the best Dallas Fort Worth suburb in 2006. Southlake is a very family-oriented place; 88% of households in the city are married couples, and 60.5% of households contain children under the age of 18. As far as demographics are concerned, about 95% of the population is white, 1.39% is African American, 3.67% is Hispanic and 1.79% is Asian. Southlake is very affluent, as the median income for a household is an astounding $131,549. Only 1.3% of the population is below the poverty line. Sabre Holdings, the owner of Travelocity and a S & P 500 company is based in Southlake. The prosperity of the general population is reflected in the price of real estate in Southlake. The average price asked for a house is $437,800. More than half of the occupied homes in Southlake have nine or more total rooms.

Southlake schools are known for their high standard of education. Parts of the city are in three different school districts: Carroll Independent School District, Northwest Independent School District and the highly respected Keller Independent School District. All three come with high marks.

There is a variety of entertainment available in Southlake. One of the highlights for many visitors and residents is the town’s large assortment of festivals. Some of Southlake’s best festivals include Oktober Fest, Art in the Square, the Stars and Stripes Celebration for the 4th of July, and the Holiday Celebration around Christmas time. Another element of Southlake not to be missed is the outstanding shopping opportunities. One of the finest shopping centers in the entire DFW Metroplex is located here: the Southlake Town Square. Just off of State Highway 114, the Southlake Town Square boasts many excellent stores and restaurants. The Hilton Hotel is also coming soon.

Speaking of restaurants, Southlake has some great ones. Foremost among these is Kincaid’s Burgers, which is famous throughout Texas for their great hamburgers. Feedstore BBQ, a hole in the wall restaurant, is one of North Texas’ best kept secrets. Johnny B’s Burgers and Shakes is a great place for the whole family to go in the summer, and if you are looking for Asian cuisine, Sushi Sam and Pei Wei Asian Diner will give you the taste of the Orient.

There are plenty of recreational opportunities in Southlake to experience. With more than 675 acres of parks, 45 practice and game fields, 6 miles of park trails and 11 pavilions, there is never a shortage of places to go have fun. Bicentennial Park offers movies in the park during the summer and has a fishing pond.

The City of Southlake Parks and Recreation Department also provides lots of different sports leagues to compete in, such as basketball, flag football, volleyball and softball.
